Bhutan Trip Itinerary

Embark on a rare and enriching east-to-west expedition through the enchanting Kingdom of Bhutan — beginning at the lesser-travelled gateway of Samdrup Jongkhar, nestled along the Indian border, and journeying across dramatic mountain passes, ancient dzongs, living cultural heartlands, and remote spiritual sanctuaries, all the way to the iconic Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest). This 15-day adventure takes you deep into Bhutan’s spiritual soul and rugged landscapes — from the ancient weavers’ village of Khoma to the crane-filled valleys of Phobjikha, and from the sacred Kurjey Lhakhang to the historic Trongsa Dzong, once the seat of power for Bhutan’s kings.

Along the way, discover vibrant traditions, warm local hospitality, and the breathtaking grandeur of Himalayan nature at every turn. This is not just a trip — it is a slow, immersive unfolding of Bhutan’s mysterious beauty, for travellers seeking depth, discovery, and awe.

All our tours are fully customisable — the itineraries you see are simply a starting point. We’ll work closely with you to tailor every detail so your Bhutan journey is truly your own.

Day 1

Welcome to Samdrup Jongkhar

Begin your Bhutan adventure in Samdrup Jongkhar, the gateway in the southeast bordering Assam, India. Arrive from Guwahati and explore the cultural blend of this bustling frontier town. Visit the revered Hanumaan Temple, a symbol of spiritual unity, and savour a mix of Bhutanese, Continental, and Indian cuisine at local eateries.

Day 2

Into the East – Journey to Trashigang

Rise early and ascend into the highlands of eastern Bhutan. En route, stop at Kanglung Zangdopelri Lhakhang, a tranquil temple along the scenic highway. Discover traditional artistry at the Khaling National Handloom, where you can witness the vibrant weaving heritage of eastern Bhutan.

Day 3

Sacred Sites of Trashiyangtse

Enjoy a full-day excursion to Trashi Yangtse. Visit the striking white Chorten Kora, inspired by Nepal’s Boudhanath, and the ancient Trashi Yangtse Dzong, with roots tracing back to the 9th century. Don’t miss Gom Kora, a serene temple perched above the river, steeped in legend and mystique.

Day 4

Timeless Traditions – Trashigang to Mongar

Explore the historic Trashigang Dzong, the eastern stronghold of Bhutanese governance. Continue your journey to Mongar, stopping at the UNESCO-recognised Dramitse Lhakhang, birthplace of the famed “Dance of the Drums.” In Mongar, visit the striking Mongar Dzong, built without architectural plans or nails, embodying Bhutanese craftsmanship.

Day 5

Hidden Valleys – Day Trip to Lhuentse

Venture to remote Lhuentse, birthplace of Bhutan’s royal family. Stand in awe before the towering Guru Nangsey Zilneon statue in Takila. Discover the majestic Lhuentse Dzong, and hike to Khoma Village, where women weave the exquisite Kishuthara silk, Bhutan’s most prized textile.

Day 6

Highland Odyssey – Mongar to Bumthang

Make your way to Bumthang, Bhutan’s spiritual heartland. Journey through pristine alpine landscapes and traditional hamlets. Pause to revisit Takila, Lhuentse Dzong, and Khoma Village for a final glimpse into eastern Bhutan’s unique cultural identity.

Day 7

Sacred Bumthang – The Soul of Bhutan

Dive into the sacred core of Bhutan. Visit ancient temples like Jambay Lhakhang and Kenchosum Lhakhang, both dating to the 7th century. Wander through the peaceful grounds of Kurjey Lhakhang, one of the kingdom’s holiest sites. In the evening, enjoy a home visit and traditional dinner with a local Bhutanese family.

Day 8

The Heart of Monarchy – Bumthang to Trongsa

Travel to Trongsa, the ancestral home of Bhutan’s royal lineage. Discover Nabji Lhakhang, where peace was pledged by ancient kings. Marvel at the grandeur of Trongsa Dzong, then explore Chendebji Chorten and the fascinating Tower of Trongsa Museum, dedicated to Bhutan’s monarchy.

Day 9

Nature & Nobility – Trongsa to Gangtey

Descend into the glacial valley of Phobjikha, winter home of the rare Black-necked Cranes. Visit the informative Crane Centre and the spiritual Gangtey Goempa, a significant Nyingma monastery. Absorb the raw beauty of Phobjikha Valley, where time slows and silence speaks.

Day 10

Rivers and Fortresses – Gangtey to Punakha

Drive to the lush Punakha Valley. Visit the iconic Punakha Dzong, elegantly poised between the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. Cross the Pho Chhu Suspension Bridge, one of the longest in Bhutan, offering panoramic views of the valley.

Day 11

Mountain Passes and Capital Charms – Punakha to Thimphu

Ascend to the breathtaking Dochula Pass with its 108 chortens and Himalayan vistas. Arrive in Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital, and explore the artisanal Craft Gallery, serene Buddha Point, and majestic Tashichho Dzong. End the day at the bustling National Memorial Chorten, a living monument of devotion.

Day 12

Thimphu Uncovered

Discover more of Thimphu with visits to Sangaygang Viewpoint, the charming Post Office (where you can print your own stamps), and the historical Simtokha Dzong, Bhutan’s oldest fortress. Continue to Changangkha Monastery and the interactive Simply Bhutan Museum, where tradition comes alive.

Day 13

Gateway to the Valleys – Thimphu to Paro

En route to Paro, cross the famed iron bridge near Tachog Lhakhang, built by the great bridge-builder Thangtong Gyalpo. In Paro, explore the formidable Paro Dzong, delve into history at the National Museum, and take a leisurely walk through Paro Town for souvenirs and cafés.

Day 14

The Ultimate Pilgrimage – Hike to Tiger’s Nest

Today’s highlight is the legendary Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest). Perched dramatically on a cliffside, this sacred site is both a physical and spiritual journey. The hike rewards you with stunning views, inner stillness, and a deep connection to Bhutan’s mysticism.

Day 15

Farewell, For Now

Your journey through Bhutan’s hidden valleys, ancient temples, and welcoming communities comes to a close. Depart with treasured memories, newfound wisdom, and the gentle promise of return to the Land of the Thunder Dragon.

This east-to-west cultural odyssey through Bhutan is a profound passage through living history, sacred traditions, and breathtaking Himalayan beauty. Our group of three had an enjoyable trip in Bhutan booked through Soultrips. Sangay who helped us to organised the trip, was very responsive and attentive to our needs through email communications. The trip itself was truly memorable thanks to our guide and driver, Yongko and Leiki. Leiki is an excellent driver who kept us safe on the roads. Yongko is a very knowledgeable guide. He was able to explain and tell us stories of Varjayana Buddhism that was interesting and allowed us to get closer to the amazing religion. Otherwise, a statue would just be a statue that you see in the many temples in the country. Ask for this team of guide and driver (Yongko and Leiki) if you are considering going to Bhutan and wish for an enlightening journey.

I had a wonderful 7D6N in Bhutan all thanks to the team from Druk Asia / SoulTrips. I had planned for a solo trip to Bhutan, and after some searches, I chanced upon several reviews with Druk Asia which eventually led me to reach out to them and book a tour with them. All I can say is, it was the best decision to do so! Everything was seamless, from the communication with the Travel Specialist (Ugyen Dema), to the planning of itinerary, and the booking of the whole package. She was very patient and helpful throughout my conversations with her via email, and she was very prompt in replying to my queries too. Most importantly, I did not feel that she was trying to “hard sell” me anything, just genuinely trying to answer my queries and provide the best options according to my budget.

Wonderful experience from start to finish
From stepping off the plane to getting back on it we received first class service.
Both Chencho (guide) and Tashi (driver) could not have done anymore.
Even the requested 6:00 departure to hike up to Tigers Nest Monastery was accepted without a blink….
The 4 day itinerary was intense, but there was so much to cram in…. Chencho was more than happy to adjust this if we wished…. “It was our tour not hers” 😊
We even managed to experience a few surprises from Chencho along the way….(Will not tell you about these… come and find out for yourselves)!
The country is beautiful and unspoilt by mass tourism…. Hope it stays this way.
