Bhutan Helicopter Services
Experience the Himalayas as never before — soaring over monasteries, valleys and virgin peaks aboard Bhutan's official helicopter service.
Wings Over the Thunder Dragon Kingdom
Helicopters are one of the most enjoyable and effective ways to travel. In Bhutan, they represent far more — a huge step forward in the country's transportation sector and a new era for this landlocked Himalayan kingdom.
Royal Bhutan Helicopter Services Ltd began operations in November 2015 and has since safely transported thousands of travellers, logging over 1,500 flight hours.
Why Helicopters Matter Here
To outsiders, Bhutan is known for jewelled jungles and soaring peaks. But steep mountain terrain, choked jungles and fast-flowing rivers make surface travel a constant challenge. Despite building more than 10,000 kilometres of road in 50 years, goods and services still face interruption.
Landlocked between Tibet and India with limited viable land for airports, an effective helicopter network is essential — for commerce, medical evacuation, disaster response, and now, tourism.

View From the Air
The scenic tour begins with a low flight over the Paro Valley — fertile rice fields and the meandering Paro Chhu River dividing the valley in half, an unparalleled sight from above.
We then pass over ancient rural villages, followed by some of Bhutan's most famous sights: Paro Rinpung Dzong (built in the 15th century), the Taa Dzong (now the National Museum), and a breathtaking close-up of the famous Tiger's Nest Monastery — golden roofs, white walls and red accents clinging to the cliff face.
From there we head north towards Mount Jomolhari, flying along the Paro Chhu, passing over the ruins of Drugyel Dzong (1649). Jomolhari stands at 7,320m above sea level — one of the highest virgin peaks in the world, where climbing is banned as Bhutanese believe deities live on its summit.
The helicopter lands at Jangothang, the Jomolhari basecamp, for a quick snack and time to take in the surroundings. If you are lucky, you'll spot herds of blue sheep (Pseudois nayaur) clinging to the cliff sides — a rare and remarkable sight found only in the Himalayas.
From there, we return to Paro through more of Bhutan's unspoiled wilderness. Every turn reveals something new — a remote village, a hidden waterfall, a valley untouched by roads.
Bring a good camera and a wide-angle lens. The views of Tiger's Nest from above — an angle no trekker ever sees — are among the most spectacular in Bhutan.
A Unique Solution for Bhutan
The Royal Bhutan Helicopter Services Ltd (RBHS) was established on 11 November 2015 — a date chosen to commemorate His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo's 60th birthday. Headquarters are located at Paro Airport's old hangar, from which two H130 helicopters operate across Bhutan.
In its first six months, RBHS transported over 400 individuals, moved more than 40 medical patients from rural areas to the capital Thimphu, and has now carried thousands of passengers. The Department of Air Transport is expanding the helipad network across all 18 dzongkhags, opening new possibilities for remote areas.
Beyond tourism, the helicopters serve critical search and rescue, medical evacuation, disaster response and government transport roles — making RBHS one of the most important infrastructure developments in Bhutan's recent history.
