5 Day Magical Bhutan Travel Plan Itinerary
1 First Glimpse of the Dragon Kingdom
Touching down at Paro International Airport, you will be warmly greeted by your guide just outside the arrival hall. Today, we’ll take it easy to acclimatise to the altitude. Enjoy a scenic drive to Thimphu, check in to your hotel, and savour your very first taste of Bhutanese cuisine.
After lunch, visit the National Memorial Chorten, built in honour of the Third King, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. Next, explore the grand Thimphu Dzong—the largest dzong in Bhutan and the seat of the King’s office. If it’s a weekend, don’t miss the vibrant Centenary Farmers’ Market, where locals gather to sell fresh produce and handmade goods.
End the day at Kuenselphodrang Nature Park, home to the majestic Buddha Dordenma, a towering 169-foot bronze statue offering panoramic views of the valley. After dinner, enjoy a relaxing stroll through Thimphu Town, soaking in the lively atmosphere.
2 Sacred Passes and Riverfront Fortresses
This morning, we journey through the picturesque Dochula Pass, where 108 chortens were built by Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck to honour Bhutan’s military victory and to memorialise fallen souls. Take in the sweeping views of the snow-capped Himalayas before descending into the lush valley of Punakha.
Visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong, a 17th-century fortress that sits dramatically at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. Once ravaged by fire and floods, it has been lovingly restored and stands today as a breathtaking symbol of Bhutanese architecture and resilience.
In the afternoon, enjoy a short hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, built by Queen Mother Ashi Tshering Yangdon Wangchuck. This exquisite chorten took over eight years to complete and showcases intricate details drawn from sacred scriptures, making it one of the most unique spiritual monuments in the world.
3 Valleys, Blessings and Ancient Fortresses
Start your day with a gentle 20-minute walk through terraced rice fields to Chimi Lhakhang, the famed Temple of Fertility. Built by Ngawang Chogyel in the 15th century after the “Divine Madman” Drukpa Kunley blessed the site, this charming temple draws pilgrims—especially childless couples—from all over the world.
Continue your journey to the captivating Paro Valley, home to Bhutan’s most treasured monasteries and the country’s only airport. Gaze up at the mighty Mount Jomolhari, whose glacier-fed waters nourish the valley below. Visit the imposing Paro Dzong (Rinpung Dzong), a fortress-monastery dating back to the 15th century, still serving as the administrative heart of the district.
Conclude your afternoon with a visit to the haunting ruins of Drukgyal Dzong, built in 1647 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to commemorate Bhutan’s victory over Tibetan forces. Wander through the ancient ramparts and relive the glories of Bhutan’s past.
4 A Journey to the Sacred Heights
Are you ready for the ultimate highlight of your Bhutan adventure? Today, we hike to the legendary Taktsang Monastery, also known as the Tiger’s Nest. Perched precariously on a cliff 900 metres above the valley floor, this sacred site is where Guru Padmasambhava is believed to have flown on the back of a tigress in the 8th century.
A one-hour hike brings you to the cafeteria viewpoint, offering a breathtaking panorama of the monastery and valley below. Colourful prayer flags flutter in the mountain breeze, guiding your path with blessings. After a well-earned lunch, continue your spiritual exploration with a visit to Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan. Built in the 7th century, this serene sanctuary is part of a network of 108 temples believed to subdue a demoness and pin her to the earth—one of Bhutan’s most powerful sites of peace and devotion.
5 Farewell, Land of Enchantment
Today, we bid a fond farewell to the enchanting kingdom of Bhutan. After an early breakfast, transfer to Paro International Airport for your departure flight. As you leave this land of legends, sacred peaks, and timeless traditions, may you carry with you the warmth of Bhutanese hospitality, countless treasured memories, and the spirit of the Thunder Dragon. What Our Travellers Say
I've had a great time exploring the land of the thunder dragon.
Yes, it is expensive to visit but worth every penny.
The guide and driver went out of their way to show me extra highlights of the country.
My wife and I had a wonderful experience during the four days we spent visiting Bhutan. Our guide, Chencho Lham, and our driver, Namgay Thaye, did everything possible to make sure we enjoyed every moment of the trip. We visited incredible places, had time to explore the cities on our own, and even shared a fun moment together playing darts. The highlight of the trip was definitely the hike to Tiger’s Nest — a perfect combination of physical challenge, moments for reflection, and breathtaking landscapes. Bhutan is an incredible country, with a unique culture and extremely kind people. We learned a lot during the journey and would highly recommend this experience to anyone who wants to explore a less-visited destination that still has so much to teach.
Wonderful experience from start to finish
From stepping off the plane to getting back on it we received first class service.
Both Chencho (guide) and Tashi (driver) could not have done anymore.
Even the requested 6:00 departure to hike up to Tigers Nest Monastery was accepted without a blink….
The 4 day itinerary was intense, but there was so much to cram in…. Chencho was more than happy to adjust this if we wished…. “It was our tour not hers” 😊
We even managed to experience a few surprises from Chencho along the way….(Will not tell you about these… come and find out for yourselves)!
The country is beautiful and unspoilt by mass tourism…. Hope it stays this way.
Excellent trip to Bhutan in August 2025 through SoulTrips, which made the process of booking flights, obtaining my visa, and arranging hotel stays and my travel itinerary seamless. My guide Chencho and driver Tshering were knowledgeable and helpful, and I got to experience Bhutanese culture through their expert curation. I would recommend anyone use Soul Trips.
