A fruitful Bhutan trip for us
Kuzuzangpo La! Hope this email finds you in good health too.
This trip was a fruitful trip for my friend and I. As you know, besides sightseeing (mainly in Trashigang, first visit to this part of Bhutan), there were visits to the schools and families we had identified to help. We had achieved 80% of what we set out to do. The rough terrain as well as the long rides from one destination to the next which we had to "endure" was worth and the "chance sighting" of the 4th king; Druk Gyalpo Jigme Singye Wangchuck on 17 Dec14 (national day of Bhutan!) made this trip even more rewarding. We also saw the black-necked crane in close range. And to feel in the atmosphere on the national day of Bhutan, my friend and I actually donned the traditional costume of Bhutan and we felt very Bhutanese on that day! Haha.
We have generally no issue with the food but had on a couple of times requested the kitchen staff (through the guide) to use cooking oil instead of cheese/butter to fried the vegetables as food turned cold easily during winter and the taste of cold cheese/butter was a little too much for us.
As for the accommodation, we were more than happy with the arrangement except for the stay at Mongar. The hot water supply was really pathetic! I literally had only 6 scoops of water to shower ....could not wait to fill up the pail as it was too cold... haha. The stay at Hotel Lobesa (Punakha), Hotel Druk Deothjung (Trashigang) and Hotel Uma (Paro) was really fantastic! The rooms were clean and adequately heated up. Oh yes, we would like to recommend Valley Resort at Jakar, Bumthang as the alternate accommodation for a night stay in Bumthang. Went there for lunch (food was good!) and the owner invited us to view the hotel rooms. They were moderate size rooms with balcony and modern shower facilities.
Hope this feedback helps.
