5 Days Pemako Thimphu and Taj Paro Retreat Itinerary
1 Touch Down in Paro & Journey into the Heart of Thimphu
Elevation: 2,334m | Drive time: around 1.5 hours
Your Bhutan adventure begins with one of the world’s most scenic landings as your Drukair flight weaves through Himalayan peaks into the Paro Valley. After a warm welcome from your private guide, ease into the altitude with a gentle drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s charming capital, where tradition and modern life exist in perfect harmony. After checking in, enjoy your first taste of authentic Bhutanese cuisine before heading out to explore the city’s spiritual and cultural highlights.
Start at the magnificent Buddha Dordenma, a towering golden statue overlooking the Thimphu Valley. Standing over 50 metres tall and housing more than 100,000 smaller Buddha statues inside, it radiates peace, serenity and breathtaking views across the mountains.
Continue to the National Memorial Chorten, the spiritual heartbeat of the city, where locals gather daily to walk in prayerful circles, spin prayer wheels and whisper mantras. Inside, vibrant murals and sacred mandalas bring Buddhist teachings vividly to life.
Next, soak up the colours and flavours of Bhutan at the Centenary Farmers’ Market. Wander among stalls piled high with fresh mountain produce, fragrant herbs, homemade snacks and local handicrafts. It’s the perfect place to experience everyday Bhutanese life and pick up meaningful souvenirs.
As evening approaches, visit the majestic Tashichho Dzong — the seat of Bhutan’s government and monastic body. Stroll through its beautifully kept courtyards as golden rooftops glow against the setting sun, offering a striking glimpse into Bhutan’s blend of spirituality and governance.

2 Thimphu’s Nature, Traditions & Living Heritage
Elevation: 2,334m | Drive time: minimal
Begin the day with the serene Sangaygang Wangditse Nature Loop, a scenic forest trail starting near the radio tower. This peaceful walk winds through pine forests and open ridges, rewarding you with sweeping views over Thimphu Valley and the grand Thimphu Dzong below — a perfect moment of calm and reflection.
Next, visit the Motithang Takin Preserve, home to Bhutan’s beloved national animal. These gentle goat-cow creatures roam freely in a forest sanctuary just outside town, offering a relaxed and charming wildlife encounter.
Continue north to Pangri Zampa, a beautiful riverside monastery and Bhutan’s Royal College of Astrology. Here, monks study ancient cosmic sciences and locals seek auspicious dates for important life events. With prior arrangement, you may even receive your own traditional astrological reading — a fascinating insight into Bhutanese belief systems.
Afterwards, head to Thimphu’s General Post Office and Postal Museum, where you can design personalised Bhutanese postage stamps featuring your own photo — a fun and uniquely Bhutan experience.
Round off the day at Choki Traditional Art School, a not-for-profit institution preserving Bhutan’s sacred arts. Watch students create thangka paintings, carvings and textiles, explore the heritage museum in a centuries-old farmhouse, and even try your hand at a creative workshop for a deeper cultural connection.

3 Scenic Drive from Thimphu to Paro Valley
Elevation: 2,200m | Drive time: around 1.5 hours
Today you journey into the beautiful Paro Valley, home to Bhutan’s most ancient temples, lush rice fields and the country’s only international airport. Snow-fed rivers flow from Mount Chomolhari, shaping this picturesque landscape.
Make a memorable stop at Tachog Lhakhang, a 14th-century temple founded by the legendary bridge-builder Thangtong Gyalpo. Cross a traditional iron chain bridge before climbing gently up to the hillside sanctuary, where serene river views and sacred legends await.
Continue to the sacred Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest and holiest temples dating back over 1,300 years. Built in the 7th century, this peaceful complex has been blessed by great Buddhist masters for centuries and remains a powerful place of prayer and devotion.
Next, wander through Kaja Throm, Paro’s lively open-air market filled with fresh produce, traditional snacks, handwoven textiles and local crafts — a wonderful place to mingle with locals and experience daily Bhutanese life.
End the day at the National Museum housed in the historic Ta Dzong watchtower. Discover over 1,500 years of Bhutanese history through royal artefacts, ancient weapons, religious treasures and cultural displays, all set within a remarkable circular fortress overlooking the valley.

4 Hike to the Legendary Tiger’s Nest Monastery
Elevation: 3,120m | Hiking time: around 5–6 hours round trip
Today is the unforgettable highlight of your Bhutan journey — the hike to Taktsang Monastery, famously known as the Tiger’s Nest. Clinging dramatically to a sheer cliff face high above Paro Valley, this sacred site is one of the world’s most awe-inspiring monasteries.
According to legend, Guru Padmasambhava flew here on the back of a tigress in the 8th century to meditate in the caves that now form the monastery’s heart. The scenic trail winds through pine forests draped in prayer flags, offering ever-changing panoramic views as you climb higher. Reaching the monastery feels both triumphant and deeply spiritual — a moment that stays with travellers long after they leave Bhutan.

What Our Travellers Say
Druk Asia has strong networks with DrukAir and local tour agencies, making logistics a total breeze. The itinerary was well-planned yet flexible enough to accommodate different needs. We could decide when we wanted to get up, which places to visit or simply recuperate in solitude. Will go with Druk Asia again if I were to go back for spring or autumn. Won’t have it any other way!
My trip to Bhutan was pleasant and well organized by Druk Asia. I was very happy and comfortable with my tour guide, Tshering, and had absolute confidence in my driver, Chimmi. Tshering kept me entertained throughout the trip with histories and stories about Bhutan while Chimmi was an excellent driver. Bhutan is a very beautiful country with its unique Buddhist culture and a nation of very warm people. The sceneries were spectacular and its culture charming. I will definitely visit Bhutan again and recommend Druk Asia to my friends.
I knew this Druk Asia through my friend who initially asked me to go to Bhutan. I have to say this travel is excellent. We went to Bhutan through Thailand and the next day we missed the flight. Bhutan’s flight is a bit strange in a sense that we need to be at Thai’s airport 2 hours before departure. The gate closed quite early. Druk Asia helped us a lot to arrange our next day flight. During our time in Bhutan, this travel agent frequently asked our condition there whether we were alright or not. This sense of caring is simply excellent, particularly for the country like Bhutan which is in the Himalayan continent. I really grateful to go to this country with Druk Asia. Excellent!
Just wanted to let both of you know that we had a great time in Bhutan. Thanks for looking into the details. Both our guide and driver were great. Thanks again!
Back from Bhutan, I wanted to let you know that this has probably been the best holiday I ever had. Bhutan is really a wonderful place, the people are so friendly and the landscape gorgeous. We also had the best weather one could ask for, and that helped. We have been very happy the whole tour. One suggestion I would give you is to propose your future clients to spend 1 night in a farmhouse. We did, and we loved it. The host was absolutely nice and the experience of sharing dinner, breakfast and the ordinary life of a Bhutanese family was absolutely fantastic.
An unique experience! We had wonderful time in Bhutan. Though it was a short trip, we enjoyed natural beauty, spectacular view and warm friendly people. We have been many countries but this trip was something different, ...memorable and nostalgic.
