A family home with a new chapter
The appeal of Tshomen begins with the house itself. Its connection to Paro comes through the generations who have called it home and the traditions they continue to share.
Today, that family home welcomes travellers as SoulStays Tshomen. SoulStays was founded by James Low following 47 years in hospitality, with an emphasis on how guests feel during their stay: welcomed, comfortable and personally cared for. Tshomen is the first property to express that approach.
It is an appealing choice if you enjoy accommodation with an individual identity and hosts whose stories help you understand the place you are visiting.
The mermaid legend behind Tshomen
Tshomen takes its name from a story passed down within the family. According to the legend, a lake once occupied the ground floor of the house, and a mystical Tshomen, or mermaid, lived in its waters.
Although the lake has disappeared, the story remains part of the home's identity. Angay Dawa Lham, the sixth generation of the family, continues to care for the ancestral home.
The family's annual Mermaid Festival keeps that connection alive, bringing descendants and the local community together. Guests whose stays coincide with the celebration may have an opportunity to join. Ask us to check the dates and arrangements if this interests you.
Rooms at Tshomen Paro
The five rooms take their names from Bhutan's Eight Auspicious Symbols, or Tashi Tagye. Each has a private ensuite bathroom.
The interiors combine expressive colours, layered fabrics and Bhutanese decorative details. Each room has its own mood, giving the house a collected, personal feel.
Dining and shared spaces
Food and conversation are part of the attraction here. Enjoy Bhutanese home cooking, or ask about a cooking experience to learn more about the dishes you encounter during your trip.
The dining room occupies a rustic, barn-inspired setting, creating an informal place to gather over a meal. The Residents' Lounge offers complimentary refreshments and Himalayan capsule coffee, while the Granary Bar provides a setting for an evening whisky.
Outside, the patio looks across the surrounding fields. Leave space in your itinerary for a cup of tea and an unhurried afternoon.
Who will enjoy staying at Tshomen
We recommend considering Tshomen if you enjoy family stories, expressive interiors and opportunities to connect with local culture. Couples, solo travellers and families can choose a room configuration that suits their party.
The house's traditional timber construction means sound carries between spaces. Guests are asked to keep noise low, particularly in the evenings.
