What Makes the Lungchutse Hike Special

The Lungchutse Hike is one of Bhutan’s most rewarding ridge walks, giving you some of the finest Himalayan panoramas you’ll find without committing to a multi-day trek. Starting from the iconic Dochula Pass, the trail leads you through serene forests of rhododendron, fir, hemlock, and magnolia before delivering you to Lungchutse Lhakhang, perched on a high ridge overlooking the snow-capped giants of the Himalayas.

On a clear day, you can see peaks stretching from Jomolhari all the way to Gangkar Puensum. It’s a meditative, atmospheric hike that feels wonderfully remote despite being close to the highway.

About the Lungchutse Trail

Your hike begins at Dochula Pass (3,100 m), a scenic landmark known for its 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens. The trail quickly moves into dense forest, where you’ll be surrounded by moss-covered trunks, towering old-growth trees, and birdsong echoing through the canopy. In spring, the rhododendrons bloom in vivid reds, pinks, and whites, turning the trail into a magical passageway of colour.

The climb is gradual but steady, and as you gain elevation, the forest begins to thin. Eventually, you’ll emerge onto the windswept ridge where Lungchutse Lhakhang stands quietly, offering a peaceful spot to rest, reflect, and enjoy the sweeping views.

Walk around the ridge and you’ll be treated to a 360-degree panorama—deep valleys, rolling ridgelines, and the snow-clad Himalayan range shimmering in the distance. Many travellers spend extra time here simply soaking in the stillness.

If you prefer a circular route, you can descend via Trashigang Monastery, a picturesque detour that brings you through open meadows and smaller forest paths before looping back towards Dochula.
