History of the Jewel Heritage
The story of The Jewel Heritage Paro is inseparable from the spiritual lineage of the land it stands on. This is not simply a place chosen for its views or tranquillity—it is a site rooted in Bhutan’s religious history.
The accommodation is located in Chang Sima, within Paro Dzongkhag—the birthplace of Mipham Wangpo, also known as Pema Kara. Born in 1864 during the Wood Rooster year, he would go on to become the 56th Je Khenpo, serving as Bhutan’s spiritual head from 1919 to 1922.
A Life Shaped by Spiritual Devotion
From an early age, Mipham Wangpo was immersed in a deeply spiritual environment, shaped by a family connected to the Drukpa Kagyu lineage. His path was marked by discipline and devotion—years of rigorous monastic training where he mastered Buddhist scriptures, ritual practices, and philosophical thought.
His education went far beyond memorisation. It was a complete immersion into Buddhist philosophy and logic, combined with the lived practice of rituals that continue to define Bhutanese spiritual life today. Those who knew him recognised not just his intellect, but a quiet depth of understanding that set him apart.
Ascending to Je Khenpo
In 1919, Mipham Wangpo was appointed Je Khenpo—one of the most revered positions in Bhutan’s monastic hierarchy. The role carries immense responsibility, serving as the spiritual leader of the nation.
His appointment reflected not only his scholarship, but the deep respect he commanded among the monastic community.
As Je Khenpo, he presided over important religious ceremonies and played a vital advisory role to the King and government, offering spiritual guidance during a formative period in Bhutan’s history.
A Legacy That Endures
Though his tenure lasted just three years, Mipham Wangpo’s influence left a lasting imprint. He strengthened the monastic community, upheld discipline, and ensured the continuity of Bhutan’s spiritual traditions.
His leadership helped preserve the integrity of Bhutan’s religious institutions at a time when such continuity was vital. Even today, his legacy is remembered as one of quiet strength, dedication, and unwavering commitment to Bhutan’s cultural and spiritual identity.
A Place That Carries Memory
To stay at The Jewel Heritage Paro is, in some small way, to be part of this lineage.
The land beneath your feet is not incidental—it is the very ground where a spiritual leader once began his journey. There is a certain stillness here that feels inherited, as though the past has not entirely left.
And perhaps that is what makes this place different.
It is a continuation of something much older, still gently alive.
