The Story of Rimphu Heritage

Rimphu Heritage is more than just a guesthouse—it’s a living piece of Paro’s history. This ancestral home once belonged to Tshongpa Gesha Tashi, a well-known businessman from Paro. Fondly remembered as Rimphu Gesha Tashi, he earned his name as a trader for the grand Paro Dzong, also known locally as Rimphu Dzong. The house itself carries this legacy, standing as a tribute to both the man and the fortress that shaped its identity. Today, the home is lovingly owned for by Angay Dawa Lham, now 85 years old, who represents the sixth generation of the Rimphu family line. Her presence ensures that the stories, traditions, and spirit of the house continue to thrive, offering guests not just a stay, but a connection to Bhutan’s past.

Rimphu Heritage also holds its own mysteries. Local lore tells of a time when the ground floor was once a shimmering lake, believed to be the dwelling place of a mermaid. Though the lake has long since vanished, a small pond still exists below the house—an echo of the legend that lingers in the hearts of the family. To this day, the two main households connected to Rimphu Heritage continue to honour this story through the annual Mermaid Festival, keeping alive a tradition that blends myth, memory, and community. As you wander through the home, you’ll also discover artefacts that are over a century old—carefully preserved heirlooms that tell their own stories of Bhutan’s past.
