What Makes the Talakha Hike Special
The Talakha Hike is one of the toughest yet most rewarding treks in the Thimphu region. Rising high above the valley, this route delivers sweeping views of the Thimphu Valley, Dochula Pass, and surrounding peaks. The trail winds through bamboo forests, logging sites, and open ridges, offering an ever-changing natural landscape.
While the path lacks clear signage, its adventurous nature adds to the charm. Expect to be joined by friendly local dogs, who often accompany trekkers and chase off yaks or other animals along the way. This hike is ideal for strong hikers seeking solitude, challenge, and spectacular high-altitude vistas.
About the Talakha Trail
The hike begins at the Talakha Monastery (Talakha Goempa), located on the southern ridges visible from central Thimphu. The road is rough and unsealed.
Upon arrival, take a few moments to admire the panoramic view of Thimphu Valley from the monastery courtyard. On a clear day, you can even glimpse the distant Dochula Pass. Begin your trek from the archery ground behind the monastery, following the trail upward. It’s common for 10 or more monastery dogs to join the hike — a lively and protective escort.
The path leads through bamboo groves and logging clearings before merging with a dirt road. Turn right and look for a smaller track branching left up the mountain. The trail is not well-marked, so careful observation is required. From here, the route is a consistent uphill climb. Even when it appears to split, all paths eventually rejoin along the ridge.
Along the way, you’ll encounter stick barriers (easy to pass) and several scenic rest points — perfect for short breaks and photos. Seasonal changes transform the trail dramatically:
Summer: lush greenery and blooming rhododendrons.
Winter: dry terrain with crisp, clear views of snow-capped peaks.
Near the summit (around 4,000 m), you’ll find colorful prayer flags fluttering in the wind — an ideal lunch or rest spot. The true Talakha Peak lies another 150 m higher, offering panoramic mountain vistas for those with extra energy and time.
For the descent, stay close to the ridge. The trickiest part is locating the path from the road back to the monastery. If unsure, follow the road — it leads to the Basic Health Unit, about 30 minutes below the monastery, from where you can easily find your way back to Thimphu.
