This 11-day itinerary offers a rich and immersive experience—perfect for those seeking to uncover the spiritual depth, cultural heritage, and breathtaking natural beauty of the Land of the Thunder Dragon. From the vibrant capital of Thimphu to the serene Phobjikha Valley and the legendary Tiger’s Nest in Paro, each day brings a new adventure, woven together with warmth, wonder, and the timeless wisdom of Bhutanese life.

All our tours are fully customisable — the itineraries you see are simply a starting point. We'll work closely with you to tailor every detail.

1 Arrival in the Land of the Thunder Dragon

Welcome to Bhutan, the Land of the Thunder Dragon. Touching down at Paro International Airport, you will be warmly greeted by your guide upon exiting the arrival hall. To help you acclimatise to the altitude, we’ll take it easy today. Drive to Thimphu, check in to your hotel, and enjoy your first taste of Bhutanese cuisine.

Drive up to Sangaygang, a viewpoint about 15 minutes from Thimphu city centre. From here, relish the panoramic view of the city below. Along the way, visit the Takin Enclosure, home to Bhutan’s national animal, the curious Takin, a creature believed to be part cow, part goat.

End the day at Buddha Point in Kuenselphodrang, where the 169-foot bronze Buddha Dordenma gazes serenely over the valley. The sweeping views of Thimphu from this sacred hilltop are especially magical as the sun sets.

2 Immersion in Thimphu’s Culture and Craft

Begin with a visit to the Folk Heritage Museum, which connects visitors to Bhutan’s rural past through exhibits of artefacts used in everyday life. Continue to the National Textile Museum, where you’ll witness the intricate art of traditional Bhutanese weaving.

Pay your respects at the National Memorial Chorten, a revered landmark built in honour of King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk. Then, visit Jungshi Papermaking Factory to see how Bhutanese artisans create handmade paper from the bark of local trees.

Explore the Simtokha Dzong, the oldest fortress in Bhutan, dramatically perched on a ridge five miles from the city. After lunch, embark on a day trek to Tango Goemba, an important centre of Buddhist learning since the 12th century. Enjoy a picnic by the river surrounded by pristine nature.

Wrap up the day at the lively Centenary Farmers’ Market, where locals from the surrounding valleys gather to sell fresh produce and crafts every weekend.

3 Journey to Punakha via Dochula Pass

Visit the majestic Thimphu Dzong, the seat of Bhutan’s monarchy and a fine example of Bhutanese architecture. Then begin your scenic drive to Punakha, stopping at the stunning Dochula Pass. At 3,100 metres, it offers spectacular Himalayan views and is home to 108 memorial chortens built by Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck.

In Punakha, marvel at the grandeur of Punakha Dzong, a fortress built in 1637 at the confluence of the Pho Chu and Mo Chu rivers. Once the capital of Bhutan, this masterpiece of craftsmanship remains the winter residence of the Chief Abbot.

Continue to the sacred Chimi Lhakhang, a fertility temple built by the 'Divine Madman', Drukpa Kuenlay. A short hike through terraced fields leads you to this humble yet deeply spiritual site.

End the day with a hike to the beautifully situated Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, constructed by the Queen Mother to promote peace. It is a dazzling showcase of symbolic art drawn from Buddhist scriptures.

4 Into Central Bhutan

We begin the drive eastward toward Trongsa and the spiritual heartland of Bhutan. Stop to view the Wangdue Phodrang Dzong, built in 1638 and perched on a dramatic hilltop overlooking the confluence of two rivers.

As we journey deeper, enjoy glimpses of traditional life in the Wangdue region, known for its bamboo crafts, slate carvings, and untamed beauty. You’ll pass scenic villages and peaceful landscapes that offer a rare look at Bhutan’s unspoilt countryside.

5 Spiritual Depths of Bumthang Valley

Welcome to Bumthang, a sacred region considered the cradle of Bhutanese Buddhism. Begin with a gentle hike to Tamshing Goemba, founded in 1501 by the great saint Pema Lingpa. Then visit the revered Kurjey Lhakhang, where Guru Rinpoche left an imprint of his body on a rock.

Step into the ancient Jambay Lhakhang, built in 659 by the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo to pin down a demoness. In October, this temple comes alive during the spectacular Jambay Lhakhang Drup.

Explore the majestic Jakar Dzong, perched above the valley, and in the afternoon, take a peaceful hike across a suspension bridge to the hidden Thangbi Lhakhang, nestled in a remote hamlet.

6 Mysticism and Legends of Tang Valley

Visit Mebar Tsho (the Burning Lake), one of Bhutan’s most sacred pilgrimage sites. Here, Terton Pema Lingpa is said to have emerged from the lake with a still-burning butter lamp and hidden treasures.

Venture into the remote Tang Valley, hiking across farm fields to reach the enchanting Ugyen Choling Palace. Built in the 17th century and still owned by descendants of its founder, the palace hosts a captivating museum of Bhutanese nobility and folklore. Spend the night in the palace guesthouse, where traditional dance and music may accompany your dinner.

7 Royal Lineage at Trongsa

En route to Gangtey, stop in Trongsa, the ancestral seat of Bhutan’s royal family. Every king has served as governor of Trongsa before ascending the throne.

Explore the mighty Trongsa Dzong, a fortress that sprawls across a ridge above the Mangde Chu River. Then ascend to the Taa Dzong, now a heritage museum chronicling the region’s significance through artefacts and displays.

8 Glacial Valleys and Crane Country

Descend into the breathtaking Phobjikha Valley, winter home to the rare and graceful Black-Necked Cranes that migrate from Tibet each November through March. This glacial valley is a designated conservation area and offers unmatched serenity.

Visit the imposing Gangtey Goemba, a 17th-century monastery that stands watch over the valley. In the afternoon, drive to Paro, crossing majestic mountain passes and fertile valleys along the way.

9 Wonders of the Paro Valley

Explore the beautiful Paro Valley, framed by the glacier-fed Pa Chhu and watched over by Mount Jomolhari. Visit the striking Paro Dzong, a 15th-century fortress still used as an administrative centre.

Step into the round stone Ta Dzong, originally a watchtower and now home to Bhutan’s National Museum, showcasing everything from antique weapons to religious artefacts.

Wander the ruins of the evocative Drukgyal Dzong, once a fortress defending against Tibetan invasions, now a poignant reminder of Bhutan’s warrior past.

10 Haa Valley and Chele La Pass

Take a spectacular drive over Chele La Pass at 3,988m, the highest motorable pass in Bhutan. On a clear day, enjoy sweeping views of Paro and Haa valleys, and perhaps even the snow-capped Himalayas.

Descend into the untouched Haa Valley, one of Bhutan’s least-visited gems. Visit Katsho Village and the tranquil Katso Lhakhang, experiencing traditional life in a valley only opened to tourism in 2002.

Return to Paro in the evening, as there are no tourist-standard hotels in Haa.

11 The Legendary Tiger’s Nest

Save the best for last with a pilgrimage to Taktsang Monastery, or the Tiger’s Nest, perched on a cliff 900 metres above the valley floor. A 2-hour hike through pine forests and prayer-flag-lined trails leads you to this most iconic of Bhutanese landmarks, believed to be where Guru Padmasambhava meditated in the 8th century.

After descending, enjoy a Bhutanese lunch, then visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in the country and said to pin down a demoness who once threatened to stop the spread of Buddhism.

As your journey draws to a close, reflect on the serenity, joy, and wonder that Bhutan has gifted you.

Dear Sonam

Kuzuzangpo La

Firstly, kadin-chhey for calling me in Bhutan to check on us. It’s been a great time in Bhutan and we had taken tons of beautiful pictures, where we have to brainstorming to choose the nicest pictures to post to you. But it is tough, because Bhutan is so picturesque, even though we anyhow or anywhere pose; we still managed to get a nice photo. The nice weather and friendly people, some of them are discussing if they want to retire in Bhutan.

Kudos to both guide Ugyen and driver Gampo; Ugyen help us pull through some of the difficult part during our hiking trip, which is not easy when he had to take care 7 of us. He helps to take many scenic group photos. He is full of tricks and never failed to make us laugh. Gampo - our driver is calm and smiling.
