About the Kuenselphodrang Trail

This pleasant and moderately easy route can be hiked in either direction—between Buddha Point and Changangkha Lhakhang. Many walkers prefer starting from Changangkha Lhakhang, as the views of the towering Buddha Dordenma emerging through the trees and prayer flags are especially striking. Begin at the upper car park above the Lhakhang and take the staircase to the right; the left path is sometimes closed, and the sealed road below does not connect properly to the trail.

From here, the trail leads you through a mix of woodland and rainforest, occasionally crossing a logging track and opening into viewpoints where the Thimphu Valley spreads out beneath you. The path is mostly level with gentle ascents and descents, making it one of the most accessible hikes in the region. If you begin from the lower Kuenselphodrang side, the route starts on a well-marked path rising through tall pine trees. The scent of pine and the soft crunch of needles underfoot give the walk a calm, almost meditative atmosphere. As you climb gently upward, you’ll glimpse the valley opening between the branches—particularly beautiful in the early morning light. Rest stops along the way make it easy to pause, take in the views, and enjoy the forest setting. Spring brings splashes of colour from flowering plants, while autumn offers crisp air and clear skies.

As you approach the upper section of the trail, the immense Buddha Dordenma gradually comes into view. Standing over 50 metres tall and housing thousands of smaller Buddha statues inside, it’s an awe-inspiring finishing point. The surrounding viewpoint offers sweeping panoramas of Thimphu, making it a brilliant spot for photos and a peaceful place to unwind after your walk.
