Bhutan is often described as the world’s only carbon-negative country — a place where forests cover more than 70% of the land and environmental protection is enshrined in the constitution. Travelling here carries a responsibility.
At Druk Asia, sustainability is not an afterthought. It is a guiding principle behind how we design our tours, partner with communities, and support Bhutan’s long-term environmental and social priorities.
Every trip you take with us is built around a simple belief: tourism should leave Bhutan better than it found it.
From reforestation projects and youth-led environmental programmes to reducing single-use plastics and supporting local communities, our initiatives are designed to create meaningful impact for the people, landscapes, and culture that make Bhutan extraordinary.
A Partnership for Bhutan’s Forests
The “Nurture A Tree” Programme
In 2026, Druk Asia and SoulTrips signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding with the Bhutan Youth Development Fund (BYDF) to launch the “Nurture A Tree” Programme, a long-term environmental initiative dedicated to biodiversity and youth empowerment.
Under this partnership:
888 flowering tree saplings are planted every year, enriching Bhutan’s natural landscapes. Our guests can opt to engage in tree planting during their trip to Bhutan.
Plantation drives are led by Bhutanese youth through the Young Volunteers in Action (Y-VIA) network.
Participants learn environmental stewardship through monitoring, conservation planning and community engagement.
An Annual Environment Forum brings young leaders together to discuss sustainability and Bhutan’s environmental future.
The programme focuses particularly on flowering tree species, enhancing biodiversity while creating vibrant seasonal landscapes across Bhutan’s valleys and hillsides.
For travellers, this initiative represents something meaningful: every journey helps contribute to Bhutan’s long-term ecological resilience.
Reducing Plastic Waste in Bhutan
Plastic waste has become one of the most pressing global environmental challenges. Bhutan remains one of the cleanest countries in the world, but maintaining that standard requires conscious action from visitors and tourism providers alike.
Druk Asia has taken a proactive step to replace single-use plastic bottles with reusable water bottles for travellers.
Instead of disposable plastic:
This simple shift significantly reduces plastic waste generated during tours and aligns with Bhutan’s broader environmental ethos of low-impact travel.
The goal is simple: fewer plastic bottles left behind, and a cleaner Himalayan environment for generations to come.
On average, a traveller can use around 30 single-use plastic water bottles during a trip. When you multiply that by thousands of visitors each year, the numbers become staggering. What begins as a convenient purchase quickly turns into mountains of plastic that must be managed, transported, or disposed of.
In fragile mountain environments, plastic waste can end up in landfills, clog drains during monsoon seasons, or slowly break down into microplastics that affect soil and waterways.
Bhutan has long positioned itself as a global model for environmental stewardship. Protecting its forests, rivers and Himalayan landscapes requires participation not only from local communities but also from those who come to visit. Tourism providers like us therefore have a responsibility to ensure that travel experiences align with Bhutan’s philosophy of sustainability and mindful living.
Preserving Bhutan’s Cultural Heritage
Druk Asia was appointed as the marketing agency to support global fundraising efforts for the revitalisation of three national museums under the Museums of Bhutan initiative. Through this collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs, Department of Culture & Dzongkha Development, we help raise awareness and mobilise international support to preserve and share Bhutan’s cultural heritage with future generations.
Through these partnerships and initiatives:
Cultural heritage projects receive international exposure
Educational programmes encourage global cultural exchange
Museums gain resources to preserve Bhutan’s history and traditions
Additionally, Druk Asia supported the establishment of the Heritage Gallery in Lingzhi Dzong. The exhibition showcased the history, culture, and traditions of Bhutan and displayed artefacts that highlighted significant historical events, achievements, and cultural heritage, aiming to preserve and educate visitors about the past.
Druk Asia supported the initiative as part of our commitment to promote and preserve Bhutan's unique culture.
By supporting these initiatives, tourism becomes a force for cultural continuity rather than cultural erosion.
Supporting Bhutan’s Communities
Sustainability is not only about protecting landscapes. It is equally about supporting the people who live within them.
Druk Asia works closely with local communities and organisations to ensure tourism contributes directly to Bhutan’s social development.
Some of our initiatives include:
Druk Asia also donated towards the establishment of a staff canteen for the Gyalyum Charitable Trust. The canteen was created to provide staff with a comfortable space to enjoy daily meals and foster a sense of community. This initiative reflected Druk Asia’s commitment to well-being, ensuring that those working tirelessly for the Trust had access to better facilities and improved well-being.
In-kind sponsorship of T-shirts, tote bags and Bhutan Travelog guidebooks to 47 students who participated in Drukair’s Tongsa Penlop Inspire Programme in Dec 2025.

As the title sponsor for six years, Druk Asia has played a pivotal role in providing financial support, resources, and opportunities that have greatly benefited the club. With Druk Asia’s backing, Paro Football Club has been able to enhance its training facilities, secure top-quality equipment, and attract talented players and coaching staff. This significant investment has been instrumental in elevating the club’s performance and achieving its objectives on both domestic and international fronts.
Distribution of laptops, books and educational materials to schools
Infrastructure improvements such as water storage and sanitation facilities.
Support for community schools like Laptsakha Community School in Punakha.
Druk Asia sponsored two girls from Punakha, who had lost both their parents and were staying with their grandmother, through their middle and higher secondary school. Together with our friends of Bhutan, we rebuilt the roof of their house, which had been made of plastics and zinc sheets.
These initiatives aim to strengthen communities by supporting education and creating meaningful opportunities for Bhutanese youth, helping them build confidence, skills and a stronger future within their own communities.
Philanthropy and Community Engagement
Druk Asia encourages travellers to go beyond sightseeing by engaging in meaningful community experiences.
Through carefully curated philanthropy tours and partnerships with local NGOs, travellers can:
Participate in community projects
Engage with Bhutanese students and local artisans
Contribute to social and environmental initiatives
Our approach ensures that these interactions remain respectful, collaborative and beneficial to the communities involved.
Supporting Bhutan’s Environmental Philosophy
Bhutan’s development philosophy of Gross National Happiness places environmental conservation at the centre of national policy.
The country has committed to:
Druk Asia’s sustainability initiatives are designed to complement these national priorities.
Rather than simply bringing visitors into Bhutan, our goal is to help ensure tourism strengthens Bhutan’s environmental leadership.
Our Sustainability Vision
Druk Asia continues to explore new ways to deepen our environmental and social impact, including:
Expanding tree-planting programmes
Reducing plastic waste across tours
Supporting youth leadership in sustainability
Partnering with organisations focused on conservation and education
Encouraging travellers to engage responsibly with Bhutan’s communities and landscapes
Every small step contributes to a larger vision: tourism that protects what makes Bhutan unique.
