A Sustainable And Exclusive Travel Destination

Let us first talk about how the tourism industry in Bhutan is founded on the principle of sustainability. To Bhutan, tourism must be environmentally and ecologically friendly, socially and culturally acceptable and economically viable.

The Royal Government has adopted a very cautious approach to growth and development of the tourism industry in Bhutan.

Bhutan adheres to a strict “High Value, Low Volume” tourism policy to avoid the effects of mass tourism. The objective is to develop and promote Bhutan as an exclusive travel destination based on the Gross National Happiness (GNH) development philosophy and values.

The policy has allowed Bhutan to welcome tourists in a manner that contributes to socio-economic development without compromising its identity and natural environment.

In return, the “High Value, Low Volume” tourism policy has helped to nurture and preserve Bhutan’s unique cultural heritage and natural assets. As part of the policy, the government has implemented a daily tariff for all tourists visiting the country.

What is Bhutan Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)?

As part of its high-value, low-volume tourism policy, Bhutan imposes a daily Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) on all incoming tourists. Bhutan's Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) is a daily levy imposed on international tourists visiting the country.

The SDF is intended to fund various sustainable development projects in Bhutan, including environmental conservation, cultural preservation, and infrastructure development. The revenue generated from this fee supports initiatives that help maintain Bhutan’s natural landscapes, protect its rich cultural heritage, and improve the quality of life for its citizens.

This fee is designed to support sustainable tourism practices, preserve the country’s unique culture and environment, and ensure that tourism remains a positive and beneficial force for the local community and the nation as a whole.

How Much is Bhutan Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)?

The current Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) for all tourists is at USD100 per adult per night.

USD50 for children aged 6 to below 12 years old. For children aged 5 and below, the SDF is waived.
