Basochhu Waterfall
Descending dramatically over a forested rock face in Wangdue Phodrang, Basochhu Waterfall is one of Bhutan's most impressive seasonal waterfalls. Long admired from the surrounding road and valley, the cascade has become an increasingly popular place to experience Wangdue's natural beauty at close range.
A newly completed viewing deck, access steps and handrails have made the waterfall safer and more convenient to visit. The improvements transformed a once difficult-to-reach viewpoint into an emerging recreational destination
A Dramatic Seasonal Waterfall
Basochhu Waterfall is located in Wangdue Phodrang, near the Basochhu Hydropower Plant. The stream eventually joins the Punatsangchhu River approximately one kilometre downstream.
The waterfall is seasonal, with its appearance determined by rainfall and the diversion of water for hydropower generation. It is generally at its most impressive between June and September, when the monsoon brings a stronger volume of water over the cliff.
During peak flow, the falling water creates a refreshing cloud of spray around the base. The combination of cascading water, dark rock and surrounding greenery makes it an especially photogenic stop during the summer months.

The New Basochhu Waterfall Viewing Deck
Visitors once had to negotiate steep, rocky and slippery terrain to approach the waterfall. In July 2026, a viewing deck was constructed and improved access route were opened to the public.
The upgraded facilities include:
- A dedicated waterfall viewing deck
- Access steps leading from the base
- Handrails along the approach
- Safer spaces for sightseeing and photography
- Basic visitor facilities
From the deck, visitors can appreciate the height and force of the cascade while enjoying the cool spray carried through the valley.

The viewing platform is limited to a maximum of 15 people at one time. Visitors should observe this restriction and follow any directions given by the site's caretaker.
A Community Development Project
The Wangdue Phodrang Dzongkhag Administration initiated the improvement project with financial assistance from the Punatsangchhu-I Hydroelectric Project Authority.
The development cost approximately Nu 1.4 million. Construction was undertaken by the Technical Training Institute in Kuruthang together with De-Suups from Wangdue Phodrang.
The project is intended to improve both visitor safety and opportunities for nearby communities. With more people stopping at the waterfall, local residents can sell agricultural produce and other goods directly to visitors instead of travelling to more distant markets.
Around 5,000 people visited Basochhu Waterfall between the completion of the facilities in July and late September 2026.
More Visitor Facilities Planned
Further improvements are planned for Basochhu Waterfall. A standard cafeteria, glasshouse and public restrooms are expected to be developed with financial support from Druk Green Power Corporation.
These proposed additions could make the waterfall a more comfortable stop for travellers exploring Wangdue Phodrang while creating further economic opportunities for surrounding communities.
Until their completion is officially announced, visitors should not assume that food, toilets or other extensive tourist facilities are available at the site.
Local Beliefs and Responsible Behaviour
Basochhu Waterfall is connected with local beliefs and should be approached respectfully. Visitors are encouraged to maintain a peaceful atmosphere and avoid excessive noise.
To help protect the waterfall and its surroundings:
- Do not exceed the viewing deck's 15-person capacity
- Avoid shouting or playing loud music
- Do not litter or leave food packaging behind
- Avoid using tobacco products at the site
- Remain on the designated steps and viewing areas
- Keep away from slippery rocks and fast-flowing water
- Follow instructions from the caretaker
Responsible behaviour will help preserve the character of the waterfall while allowing local communities to benefit sustainably from its growing popularity.

Best Time to Visit Basochhu Waterfall
The best time to see Basochhu Waterfall is usually from June to September, when rainfall produces the most powerful cascade. The surrounding landscape is also at its greenest during this period.
However, monsoon conditions can make paths wet and slippery. Wear shoes with a firm grip, keep children close and exercise particular care near the water.
Because the waterfall's flow depends on both rainfall and hydropower water diversion, visitors should confirm current conditions before making a special journey.
A Refreshing Stop in Wangdue Phodrang
With its newly upgraded viewing deck, Basochhu Waterfall is becoming one of Wangdue Phodrang's most appealing nature stops. The development offers a safer way to enjoy the waterfall while supporting community-based tourism and local livelihoods.
Whether visited for its dramatic monsoon flow, cooling spray or picturesque setting beside the Punatsangchhu valley, Basochhu Waterfall offers travellers another reason to slow down and explore the lesser-known landscapes of Wangdue Phodrang.
