Dagana
Landmark in Bhutan
Last Updated On: 29/05/2026

Located in southern Bhutan, Dagana is one of the country’s lesser-visited districts, known for its forested hills, remote villages, rivers, and slower rural atmosphere.
Compared to Bhutan’s more popular destinations such as Paro or Punakha, Dagana feels quieter and more local, with fewer tourists and a stronger connection to everyday Bhutanese life. The region is covered by dense forests and agricultural landscapes, making it especially appealing for travelers interested in nature, countryside scenery, and off-the-beaten-path experiences.
For visitors looking to explore a less commercialized side of Bhutan, Dagana offers a calmer and more authentic travel experience.
Best Places to Visit in Dagana
Dagana Dzong
The Fortress Above the Hills
Perched on a ridge overlooking the surrounding valleys, Dagana Dzong is one of the district’s most important historical and religious landmarks.
Built in the 17th century, the dzong continues to serve as both an administrative and monastic center. Its hilltop location provides panoramic views of the forests and mountains surrounding the region.
Compared to Bhutan’s more visited dzongs, Dagana Dzong has a quieter and more local atmosphere.
Scenic Villages & Countryside
Much of Dagana’s appeal comes from the journey itself.
Travelers can experience:
-
Traditional Bhutanese villages
-
Hillside farms and terraces
-
Forest landscapes
-
Local markets
-
Everyday Bhutanese rural life
The district is especially scenic during spring and summer when the hills become lush and green.
Things to Do in Dagana
Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek
The Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek is one of Bhutan’s most scenic trekking routes, known for its high-altitude lakes, panoramic Himalayan views, and relatively accessible trekking experience compared to Bhutan’s longer and more demanding mountain treks.
Located west of Thimphu, the trek passes through alpine meadows, yak herder camps, pine forests, and remote mountain landscapes before reaching a series of glacial lakes scattered across the highlands. On clear days, trekkers can enjoy views of some of Bhutan’s most prominent Himalayan peaks, including Mount Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, and Gangkar Puensum.
Unlike more extreme treks such as the Snowman Trek, the Dagala Trek is often recommended for travelers looking for a shorter multi-day trekking experience that still offers dramatic Himalayan scenery and a strong sense of remoteness.
